Jana Irmert & Alexandra Spence - Amplified objects and electronics
In 2021 Alexandra Spence (AU / Room40, Longform Editions, Mappa) and Jana Irmert (DE / Fabrique, Important Records) developed a collaborative way of making music together across distance, mailing each other domestic objects from their separate homes and cities (Sydney and Berlin) to use as sound sources. Amongst the exchanged objects were an empty Berliner beer bottle, sand from a German beach, a tea tin, a quartz rock from rural NSW, pistachio shells, leftover IKEA nuts and bolts, and a vial of sea water from Sydney harbour. Exploring together how sound can conjure physicality, and how listening can become a form of touching, their collaboration uses sound to create a sense of connection across distance. For the Fylkingen set they are excited to finally perform in the same physical space, using a similar premise - curating objects to amplify and share sound together - delving into the relationships between sound, material and ecology.
