Short work description
This long-term project between Två Cirklar and Tam Hare culminates in a performative act that uses improvised music and spoken-word text as a basis for exploration. The event’s music is created through the merging of these two artistic components, where the combination of them is central to the collaborative nature of this creative-critical project.

The artists’ intentions for this experimental collaboration is clear to them. It is to create a ‘language’ by using these two components together, so that something is said and something will happen.

Detta långvariga projekt mellan Två Cirklar och Tam Hare kulminerar i en performativ akt som använder improviserad musik och spoken-word text som grund för utforskande. Evenemangets musik skapas genom sammansmältningen av dessa två konstnärliga komponenter, där kombinationen av dem är central för samverkanskaraktären i detta kreativt-kritiska projekt.

Konstnärernas avsikter med detta experimentella samarbete är tydliga för dem. Det är att skapa ett ’språk’ genom att använda dessa två komponenter tillsammans, så att något sägs och något händer.

To the listener
This performance is a collaboration between artist Tam Hare’s text and the music of improvisational duo Två Cirklar. We strive together, to create a situation where Tam’s text, in itself, becomes an instrument and something to relate to collectively. The musical instruments of Två Cirklar are also used in an analogous manner by them, during this performance.

Our intention is to realise a context in which our way of interacting with each other, through our instruments, corresponds to a type of entrance into the piece. This is what we intend to convey to the audience.

Tam uses his voice to perform the text but he chooses text passages from each page based on what is occurring in these interactions with Två Cirklar. This activates the text's role as a third instrument and a mediator of form and content.

Consequently, this practice might also be described as a way of relating to the mediums being used, such as instruments, which are the instrument of the medium.

Två Cirklar improvise on their instruments without any other idiom than that of their intention to create this context, together with Tam — and to simultaneously convey this situation to each other and the audience.

The content of the text does not depend on it being followed as a narrative but can be seen as a temporal exhibition of meanings and occurrences, whose weight, delimitations and clarity will shift for ourselves and the audience. The listener therefore also becomes a participant in an equivalently subjective and unpredictable manner, as that of the performers themselves.

Det här framförandet är ett samarbete mellan (text-)konstnären Tam Hare och (musik-)improvisationsduon Två cirklar. Vi strävar efter att tillsammans skapa en situation där en text skriven av Tam Hare i sig blir ett instrument och något att gemensamt förhålla sig till på ett liknande sätt som de musikinstrument som Thommy Wahlström och Pål Stenqvist använder under framförandet. Vår intention är att förverkliga ett sammanhang där vårt eget sätt att interagera med varandra genom våra instrument motsvarar den ingång till stycket vi vill förmedla till publiken.

Tam Hare använder sin röst för att framföra texten men det är genom att i stunden välja textavsnitt utifrån det som sker i samspelet med Två cirklar som aktiverar textens roll som ett tredje instrument och förmedlare av både innehåll och form.

Två cirklar improviserar på sina instrument utan något annat idiom än intentionen att tillsammans med Tam Hare skapa detta sammanhang och i samma stund förmedla det till varandra och publiken.

Textens innehåll är inte beroende av att följas som ett narrativ utan skulle kunna ses som en tidslig utställning av innebörder vars tonvikter och avgränsningar eller överblickbarhet nog kommer att skifta, både för oss själva och för lyssnaren som på så sätt säkert också blir deltagande, på ett likaledes subjektivt och
oförutsägbart vis.

Två Cirklar
Två Cirklar (Two Circles) are an improvisational duo formed in 1999 by Thommy Wahlström and Pål Stenqvist. In each instance the duo wants to carry on from their initial starting point, so as to create a single long improvisational work. This is a concurrent music between the duos’ two sounding movements and its surrounding situations. The collaboration is a considered attempt to elicit the indomitable flow and unity of the free musical tradition.

Tam Hare
Tam Hare (b. 1983 in Edinburgh, Scotland) is an artist, writer-researcher and PhD candidate based in Uppsala. The foundations of his research are primarily text-based, however performance, sound, image-making, photography and film, stem from this research and typically merge as key elements within his practice. Crucially, collaboration, curation and arts production are equally central to his work.

Pål Stenqvist
Pål designates himself as a mediographer and an interpreter of something he calls, ‘the scripture of the middle’. In other words, he is an active artist working with sound-text-object constellations and with improvisational percussion.
He was born in 1968 and lives in Visby.

Pål betecknar sig som mediograf och uttolkare av något han kallar skriften i mitten. Eller med andra ord: han är verksam som konstnär med ljud-text-objekt- konstellationer och med improvisation på slagverk.

Thommy Wahlström (b. 1968)
Is a composer and musician living in Uppsala. In the field of contemporary art music, he creates music for acoustic instruments, voice, choir and EAM. He is also active as a musician in improvised and traditional folk music.
