Umberto (US)

Like many of the great forgotten slasher-film composers, Umberto makes music with a function: to diffuse dread and ramp tension. Inspired equally by the primitivist synthesizer throbs of early 80's John Carpenter scores as well as the prog-goth giallo of Goblin and other '70s Italian horror soundtracks, classically trained Kansas City-based musician Matt Hill has continued to deepen the artistry of his paranoid, occult electronic creepscapes since launching the project in 2009.

One of the stars of the amazing Not Not Fun label, he was invited by Mogwai to play at their 2012 ATP festival and record an album for their Rock Action label,
This year he went on another extended European tour performing in night clubs as well as rock venues and released extended 12” versions of two of his most popular tracks Temple Room on Not Not Fun and The Child on Deep Distance. These new versions, along with a new 7” single, La Llorona on the Franco-Japanese label Mind, are much more for the dance floor so expect the same this evening.

"While 'Night Fantasy' opens calmly enough, it eventually dives into an '80s-inspired escapade that brings to mind scenes from a vintage slasher flick. Heavily compressed drum machines and eerie synth notes bend over Hill's driving doomsday theme, but the tune doesn't end in a bloodbath, instead hinting at a narrow getaway as harmonic overtones resonate through the song's conclusion." Mai Mai Mai (IT)

Born on a little island of the Aegean Sea around 30 years ago.
Since childhood, he followed his parents around Europe and the Near East, assimilating the different cultures, atmospheres and sonorities of the places he was involuntarily taken to. Short periods of time which were intense enough to leave indelible traces. This project is the transposition of those experiences into music and sounds: a mix of drone and ambient, steamy rhythmics, field recordings and sound-scapes which lead us to ancient and arcane ages, on the border between east and west.
After wandering for so long, he's now living in a little village on the Ionic Coast, in the South of Italy.

After the debut Theta LP, out on Boring Machines (2013) and mixed by Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu), Delta (Yerevan Tapes, 2014) is his second release and second part of his journey across the Mediterranean Sea, through hidden memories, old unconscious and sounds of past experiences, put together and mixed today using tapes, synths and sequencers. We land on a stormy night and the tale of this new adventure begins.

"Delta is one of those albums that feels like it has emerged, fully-formed and wonderfully weird, from a parallel universe or sickly secret society that we've never heard of but always suspected might be lying underneath our own"

Claudio Rocchetti (IT)

Claudio Rocchetti is one of the most active european noise musicians of the last half decade. Apart from his main solo project he is also part of 3/4HadBeenEliminated with Tricoli and Pilia, half the duo Olyvetty with visual artist Riccardo Benassi and he melts together with noisefunk duo G.I.Joe into the In Zaire power trio whom I welcomed to Stockholm 3 springs back.

His job is mainly focused around noise pastiches as the result of hardware live manipulation, turntable feedbacks and various recorded sources and objects. He's released records on Hundebiss, Hapna, Die Schachtel, Presto?!, Soleilmoon and Holidays Records. He is also the founder (with Kam Hassah) of Musica Moderna, a label focussed on field recordings, sound poetry and sound art

"Berlin based Rocchetti builds compelling structures that employ sound as sheer matter, mass, and impact. The tarry, mesmerizing hues that characterize his “music objects” are grounded in layers of sound detritus. From techno rhythms to slow melodies, edgy constructions to samples of choirs and strings, Rocchetti builds layered structures of elusive elements whose sources are often hidden, and enacts a mirror play which may cause dizziness" Musicworks

CYMBLS (IT)

CYMBLS is an experimental psichedelic-pop project based in Rome started in the beginning of 2013 by Cristiano Carosi and Isabella Cotellessa. It begins as part of an intense exploration of a typical sound strictly rooted in the italian contemporary culture which is the the 60's and 70's soundtrack sound of italian composers like Morricone, Umiliani and many others, a blend of avantgarde experimental sounds, electronica, jazz, rock and above all an always present sense of melody that balances moments of pure tone and abstraction with “implosions of feeling”. This approach and its mix of styles was the incipit to experiment on a common structure like the “pop song” playing with different elements opposed to each others, melody and confusion, electronic sounds and natural acoustic elements, treated voices and samples to generate a music that is psychedelic and out of time.

It’s a murky, alchemic concoction which veers between abstraction and chilling, determined melodies, chill drones and heady krautrock grooves. The vocals are used sparingly and there’s something woozy and slippery about it, like Hype Williams transplanted onto a hippie commune with instruments instead of machines to work with. It’s deeply psychedelic, sometimes awkward, but also quite warm and mysterious, inviting further listens to try and get your head around its weirdly flowing structures." NORMAN RECORDS

Doglife

Awesome powerful Brötzmann-esque free jazz. They are from Göteborg and released via the Omlott label (who put out Neutral) and including Mother favorite Finn Loxbo, Anna from Fire Orchestra! and Mårten Magnefors from Dark Horse.

Dog Life is a trio consisting of Anna Högberg on saxophones, Mårten Magnefors on drums and Finn Loxbo on electric bass. The band explores free improvised music on a high-energetic plateau, where three equal voices melt into a polyrhythmically repetitive force that slowly transforms and erupts with bursts of raw grind. Their debut album will be released on Omlott records in October 2014.
